Pharmacology
Glucan is a potent reticuloendothelial-modulating agent whose immunobiological activity is mediated, in part, by an increase in the number and function of macrophages. Lysozyme concentrations were increased approximately sevenfold in some studies. Biologic response modifiers, like Beta Glucan, will modulate immunity, modify neoplastic (cancer) disease and increase resistance to microbial challenge. Glucan can enhance some elements of the immune system against staphylococcal infections.
Effectiveness

Here is a PubMed abstract of a study, released in December 2003, which shows how many cancers can be eliminated using a combination of Beta Glucan to enhance the immune response and a class of "manufactured" (monoclonal) antibodies such as Herceptin, Rituxan and Erbitux, Beta-glucan functions as an adjuvant for monoclonal antibody immunotherapy by recruiting tumoricidal granulocytes as killer cells**.

Dosage and Ease of Use
Beta Glucan comes in different pill sizes up to 500 MG. Since the most used by even large people is around six 500 MG pills a day, Beta Glucan is easy to take.
People who change their eating habits greatly increase the effectiveness of the supplements they take. Consider reading the "General Diet*" subsection of the Home page.
Dosage
The majority of research was performed with fairlty large doses of Beta Glucan. It was not performed using small doses such as 3, 5, or 10 mg that some supplements contain. Some human studies used 3,000 mg daily. The amount you take depends on your helath condition:
Healthy: If you have no challenges and you are an average weight adult (150-175 lbs.), 100 to 200 mg. daily is usually recommended.
Chronic: If you have recurring problems, but they are not acute, or life threatening, you would take more. To start, most people double the above amount and observe their response.
Acute: You have a critical condition this is the protocol usually recommended: determine the therapeutic dose for your weight (refer to the chart below). Start with approximately 1/3 of the therapeutic dose and increase slowly until you reach the maximum dose. Taking more than the therapeutic amount would achieve no greater response.
Take the entire days medication at one time. To maximize absorption of Beta Glucan, take it on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
Side Effects
No side effects have been reported. Beta Glucan is manufactured from Baker's yeast. Such products have received the "Generally regarded as Safe rating by the FDA.
