These Treatments are Different
You cannot pick an alternative cancer treatment the same way you pick your other medications. Despite the enthusiastic claims of well meaning people:
- Just because Paw Paw worked for someone else, that does not mean it will work for you.
- Even though there are many viable alternative cancer treatments, there isn't a "best" treatment for a certain type or stage of cancer.
- Most alternative cancer treatments only work on a minority of the people who try it.
A person's unique body chemistry seems to be the most important consideration in selecting an alternative cancer treatment. Only energy medicine offers a selection method that takes body chemisrty into account.

Introduction
Paw Paw extract contains (among other active ingredients) acetogenins which modulate the production of ATP** (adenosine triphosphate) in mitochondria of cancer cells. This reduces the growth of blood vessels that nourish cancer cells. It also inhibits the growth of MDR (multiple drug resistance) cells. No other alternative or conventional cancer treatment (except treatments from trees similar to Paw Paw) has shown any effectiveness against MDR cells. Paw Paw is a cousin of the graviola, guanabana, and soursop trees. However, the acetogenins extracted from Paw Paw are more active against cancer than those extracted from these other sources. |

Multiple Drug Resistant Cells
| Most tumors contain a small percentage, approximately 2%, of multiple drug-resistant cells (MDR cells). Chemo is not effective against these cells. After the first round of chemo, if the chemo is effective, all of the cells that are not MDR, are destroyed. Since this accounts for the vast majority of the tumor mass, the tumor will appear to be effectively destroyed. However, the MDR cells remain and start to multiply. Eventually, a new tumor is formed that is entirely MDR. The next time chemo is used, none of the cells will be destroyed because they are all MDR. Development
Paw Paw research was performed at Purdue College by Jerry McLaughlin. The majority of the funding (20 years and about 5 million dollars) for this research was provided by NCI. Jerry McLaughlin now works with Nature Sunshine who manufacture Paw Paw twig extract in capsule form.

Pharmacology
One of the effects of Paw Paw is to reduce the ATP energy in each cell of our body. Our cells have an electrical potential that effects how the cell processes energy producing substances mostly blood sugar and oxygen from our blood supply (the red area in the graphic below).
By reducing this voltage level from 70 to 110 mv to something in the 50 mv region, normal cells can still function. However, cancer and viral cells cannot process energy at this low voltage level and start to starve. The process of starving is a slower process than being poisoned which is why Paw Paw works slower than chemo. When Paw Paw does not work, it is usually because it is not absorbed sufficiently into the cells of the body to cause this voltage reduction. Both Cantron and Protocel are designed to cause this voltage reduction. If Paw Paw does not work for a person, Cantron or Protocel may work. Blood Brain Barrier
Paw Paw is one of the few alternative cancer treatments that can pass the blood/brain barrier. The other alternative cancer treatments that can cross this barrier are Cantron and Protocel.
Effectiveness
Paw Paw seems to work on all types of cancers. An informal study of 100 cancer patients showed that Paw Paw was effective in half the cases. This is most interesting since Paw Paw seems to work the same way that Cancell (Cantron and Protocel) works and Cancell also has a 50% effectiveness as demonstrated in another informal study. However, Paw Paw gets higher marks in the effectiveness because, in the laboratory, it inhibits the growth of MDR (multiple drug resistance) cells. No other cancer treatment including chemo has shown any effectiveness against MDR cells. Jerry McLaughlin is in the negotiation process for starting clinical trials in conjunction with Harvard University. However, no formal clinical trials have yet occurred. ABSTRACT: Cancer Letters 115 (1997) 73-79 The Annonaceous acetogenin bullatacin is cytotoxic against multidrug-resistant human mammary adenocarcinoma cells. Nicholas H. Oberlies, Vicki L. Cytotoxic effects of the Annonaceous acetogenin, bullatacin, were studied in multidrug-resistant (MDR) human mammary adenocarcinoma (MCF-7/Adr) cells vs. the parental non-resistant wild type (MCF-7/wt) cells. Bullatacin was effectively cytotoxic to the MCF-7/Adr cells while it was more cytostatic to the MCF-7/wt cells. ATP depletion is the mode of action of the Annonaceous acetogenins, and these agents offer a special advantage in the chemotherapeutic treatment of MDR tumors that have ATP-dependent mechanisms.

Fourteen structurally diverse Annonaceous acetogenins, representing the three main classes of bis-adjacent, bis-nonadjacent, and single-THF ring(s), were tested for their ability to inhibit the growth of adriamycin-resistant human mammary adenocarcinoma (MCF-7/Adr) cells. This cell line is resistant to treatment with adriamycin, vincristine, and vinblastine and is, thus, multidrug-resistant (MDR). Among a series of bis-adjacent THF ring acetogenins, those with the stereochemistry of threo-trans-threo-trans-erythro (from C-15 to C-24) were the most potent with as much as 250 times the potency of adriamycin. A spacing of 13 carbons between the flanking hydroxyl of the THF ring system and the gamma-unsaturated lactone seems to be optimum with a spacing of 11 and 9 carbons being significantly less active. Several single-THF ring compounds were also quite potent, with gigantetrocin A (11) being the most potent compound tested. The acetogenins may, thus, have chemotherapeutic potential, especially with regard to MDR tumors.

Paw Paw and Viruses
ATP is a direct and indirect precursor of DNA and RNA. This can slow or stop viral reproduction for viruses such as cold sores and shingles. Although the test results below show encouraging antiviral effect, it seems that Cancell (Cantron and Protocel) has a stronger antiviral effect. On the other hand Paw Paw has shown anecdotal evidence of being a strong anti-bacterial agent.
Conclusiveness of Papers
Almost all but research papers regarding Paw Paw demonstrate significant effectiveness in the laboratory against the usual form of cancer cells and MDR cells.

Dosage and Ease of Use
Paw Paw is easy to use. You only need two capsules, three times day, and taken with some food.
People who change their eating habits greatly increase the effectiveness of the supplements they take. Consider reading the "General Diet*" subsection of the Home page.
Dosage
In March 2009, the Paw Paw produced by Natures Sunshine had reduced concentration of active ingredients due to a low yield harvest. To compensate Natures Sunshine increased the number of capsules in the bottle. Now the recommended dose for the new 8 mg of Asimina triloba per Paw Paw capsules is 2 capsules three times a day with food to avoid nausea.
Increased Dosage
Some people have had success gradually increasing the Paw Paw dosage up to 16 capsules a day. They have done this very gradually in order to avoid nausea.
Paw Paw and Cantron or Protocel
It is suggested to avoid food for 15 minutes before and after taking Cantron or Protocel, but to take Paw Paw with food. Taking Cantron or Protocel fifteen minutes before or after taking Paw Paw with some food dose not seem to have a significant effect on the the performance of either treatment. Side Effects
Paw Paw gravitates toward cells that use a lot of energy and cut off their energy supply. Since cancer cells use 10-17 times as much energy as a normal cell, Paw Paw acts on cancer cells. It is the same mechanism that made it so useful as a parasite cleanse and to kill hair lice. It is also the reason that a pregnant woman should not take it. Paw Paw could see the baby as a high energy user.
If no cancer, parasite, or other high energy consumer cells reside in the body, Paw Paw may gravitate towards fast growing cells lining the digestive and intestinal system walls. This is why the manufacturer, Nature's Sunshine, strongly cautions against long term use for non-cancer patients.
Some people with cancer have reported digestion distress such as nausea. For this reason it is recommended to take Paw Paw with food.
Cantron or Protocel and Paw Paw
You can take Protocel with Paw Paw, but don't forget to read all the Paw Paw protocols under the Dosage and Ease of Use (above) and Compatability (just below) sections. Some people respond very quickly to Cantron or Protocel. In this case the body may have excessive waste material to remove. Paw Paw can increase the response of your body and overload the waste removal system. To present this overload, some people start Paw Paw 3 to 5 weeks after starting Cantron or Protocel or starting Paw Paw before Cantron or Protocel.
Recommended dose for Paw Paw is 1 capsule four times a day at the same time as Protocel or Cantron. Since the recommended dose for Cantron or Protocel is six times a day, you would skip taking Paw Paw for two of the Cantron or Protocel doses.
Since Paw Paw is fat soluble it will work better after a person has started eating for the day. Therefore, some users start taking Paw Paw with the second dose of Cantron or Protocel. See the Dosage section just above.

Compatibility
Paw Paw seems to work in a similar manner to Cancell and may reduce the side effects of chemo, but does not interfere with chemo.
Warning: If a cancer patient uses Paw Paw during a course of chemo, the reduced side effects caused by Paw Paw may encourage the oncologist to increase the dose of chemo. If the patient then decides to stop the Paw Paw, for whatever reason, the side effects of chemo can increase and greatly threaten the patients life.
One of the ways that Paw Paw works is to prevent cancer cells from feeding on glucose by reducing the ATP energy of the cells in our body. The substances in the following list increase ATP energy and should therefore be avoided when taking Paw Paw. Some people believe that you can take some of these things with Paw Paw because they were tested with Paw Paw and Paw Paw was still able to kill cancer cells in test tubes. However, Paw Paw works in a number of ways and those other ways may have been responsible for how Paw Paw worked with some of the things on this list.
