New Prostate Cancer Test
A new urine test for prostate cancer is currently (April 2010) available. It is known as the PCA3 (prostate cancer gene 3) test or Progensa. It has not yet been submitted for Food and Drug Administration approval in the United States, but you can still get the test in the US. A Reasonable Conventional Prostate Cancer Treatment
A fairly new prostate cancer technique is gaining popularity. It is one of the first reasonable cancer treatments to come out of conventional medicine. The green laser procedure is effective in:
- Reducing prostate size by vaporizing diseased tissue
- Avoiding healthy tissue simple due to its color and the color of the laser
- Allowing continued sexual and urinary activity
- Providing rapid recovery
This procedure is done in an arthroscopic manner so you can go home the same day.

Old Conventional Prostate Cancer Treatment
A good example of conventional cancer treatment is prostate surgery. For prostate cancer patients who have surgery (a prostate):
- 17% have difficulty urinating for life
- 28% become incontinent
- 50% lose their sex life forever
It would seem that trying side-effect-free alternatives before surgery makes a lot of sense, but doctors are very skilled at talking patients out of this reasonable course of action.
Avoid Soy
Soy is rich in flavonoids, which contain components that resemble estrogen. If you have a hormone-dependent tumor, such as a breast or prostate malignancy, flavonoid-rich foods exacerbates these conditions.
Avoid Green and Black Tea
Green and black tea are also high in flavonoids.

Beta-Sitosterol
This is the active ingredient in most of the popular prostate preventatives such as saw pimento and pumpkin seed. Its effectiveness in reducing prostate swelling is clearly demonstrated in the following randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial published in Lancet. 1995 Jun 17;345(8964):1529-32. The study was run by the Department of Urology, Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany.
200 patients (recruited between April and October 1993) with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) were treated with either 20 mg beta-sitosterol (which contains a mixture of phytosterols) three times per day or placebo. Changes in urine flow parameters: beta-sitosterol treatment resulted in increasing peak flow (15.2 [5.7] mL/s from 9.9 [2.5] mL/s), and decrease of mean residual urinary volume (30.4 [39.9] mL from 65.8 [20.8] mL). These parameters did not change in the placebo group (p < 0.01). Significant improvement in symptoms and urinary flow parameters show the effectiveness of beta-sitosterol.
This result demonstrated the usefulness of beta-sitosterol in the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer.
Preventative Dosage
There is no established dosage for prostate prevention, but doses of up to 6 grams have been used for colesterol control. One source for prostate cancer prevention listed dosage as low as 60 to 135 mg.
